Lesson focus

Marco: In today's class we will see the second category of Italian direct object pronouns
Cinzia: The pronomi personali tonici
Marco: stressed direct object pronouns
Cinzia: These pronouns are used in two cases
Marco: A) to emphasize the direct object above the remaining part of the sentence. This effect is normally realized in English by raising the pitch of the voice when pronouncing the pronoun.
Cinzia: In this case they are positioned right after the verb they refer to.
Marco: For instance
Cinzia: Hanno scelto Mike come loro portavoce. → Hanno scelto lui come loro portavoce.
Marco: They chose Mike as their spokesman. → They chose him as their spokesman.
Cinzia: Desiderano invitare me e te. → Desiderano invitare noi.
Marco: They wish to invite me and you. → They wish to invite us.
Cinzia: Ho trovato solo Renato. → Ho trovato solo lui.
Marco: I only found Renato. → I only found him.
Marco: B) After any preposition.
Grammatically speaking, in this case the pronouns are not direct objects. For example
Cinzia: Vuoi uscire con Andrea? → Vuoi uscire con lui?
Marco: Do you want to date Andrea? → Do you want to date him?
Cinzia: Per te e Arnaldo non è importante. → Per voi non è importante.
Marco: It's not important to you and Arnaldo. → It's not important to you.
Cinzia: Hai veramente parlato con Sara? → Hai veramente parlato con lei?
Marco: Did you really talk to Sara? → Did you really talk to her?
Cinzia: We shall now see the stressed personal pronouns, along with the corresponding direct object and their English translation.
Marco: We will first of all present the Italian subject Personal pronoun, followed by the English subject Personal pronoun. Then the Italian stressed pronoun and finally the English stressed pronoun.
Cinzia: Io
Marco: I
Cinzia: me

Cinzia: Tu
