b> INTRODUCTION |
Asia: Hi everyone, I'm Asia. |
Daniele: And I'm Daniele. |
Asia: And welcome to Must-Know Italian Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 7. Proposing an Activity. |
Asia: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for proposing something. |
PATTERN |
Asia: For example, |
Asia: "Let's play soccer!" |
Daniele: Giochiamo a calcio! |
Daniele: [slow] Giochiamo a calcio! |
Asia: The pattern for proposing something has 2 elements. First, a verb, in this case "to play." It is conjugated in the conjunctive form, first person plural. |
Daniele: Giochiamo. |
Asia: Second, a phrase, in this case literally "at (the game of) soccer." |
Daniele: a calcio. |
Asia: Together, we have.. "Let's play soccer!" |
Daniele: Giochiamo a calcio! [slow] Giochiamo a calcio! [normal] Giochiamo a calcio! |
Asia: When you want to propose something or make a suggestion in Italian, we use the conjunctive conjugated in the first person plural. The ending of the verb for the first person plural in the conjunctive mood is exactly the same as the one for the first person plural in the indicative present tense form. |
Daniele: (-iamo). |
Asia: Aside from the context, in order to distinguish if you are making a suggestion rather than a regular description of an action, when speaking, the tone of the voice should convey the message. |
Daniele: Giochiamo a calcio! |
Asia: So remember that to propose something, you conjugate the verb in the first person plural of the conjunctive mood. Then add a noun or a phrase as necessary. |
Asia: Here is another example meaning, "Let's eat a pizza." First, a verb, in this case "to eat." It is conjugated in the conjunctive form, first person plural. |
Daniele: Mangiamo. |
Asia: Second, a noun or noun phrase, in this case "a pizza." |
Daniele: una pizza. |
Asia: Altogether we have.. |
Daniele: Mangiamo una pizza! [slow] Mangiamo una pizza! [normal] Mangiamo una pizza! |
Asia: "Let's eat a pizza." |
[pause] |
Daniele: Mangiamo una pizza! |
Asia: How do you say - "Let's read this poem”? To give you a hint, "this poem" is.. |
Daniele: questa poesia. [slow] questa poesia. [normal] questa poesia. |
Asia: Let's read this poem! |
[pause] |
Daniele: Leggiamo questa poesia! [slow] Leggiamo questa poesia! [normal] Leggiamo questa poesia! |
[pause] |
Daniele: Leggiamo questa poesia! |
