| Asia: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking about a person. |
| PATTERN |
| Asia: For example, "Who is the doctor?" |
| Daniele: Chi è il dottore? |
| Daniele: [slow] Chi è il dottore? |
| Asia: The pattern for asking about a person has 3 elements. First, the interrogative pronoun to ask about people, "who." |
| Daniele: Chi. |
| Asia: Second, a verb, in this case "to be," conjugated in the third person singular. |
| Daniele: è. |
| Asia: And last, a noun or noun phrase, which works as a copula. In this case, that’s "the doctor." |
| Daniele: il dottore. |
| Asia: Altogether, we have, "Who is the doctor?" |
| Daniele: Chi è il dottore? [slow] Chi è il dottore? [normal] Chi è il dottore? |
| Asia: Start with the interrogative pronoun “who,” |
| Daniele: Chi |
| Asia: followed by a conjugated verb. In this case, the verb "to be" is conjugated in the third person singular |
| Daniele: è |
| Asia: After the verb comes the copula— a noun or a noun phrase that is singular. If the subject is plural, the verb must be conjugated in the third person plural |
| Daniele: sono |
| Asia: Finally, if you want to add more information, you can add a complement. |
| Daniele: Chi è il dottore? |
| Asia: So remember to ask about a person, start with the word "who" |
| Daniele: Chi |
| Asia: followed by a conjugated verb in the third person singular. Last, add a singular noun. When the subject is plural, conjugate the verb in the third person plural. |
| Asia: Here's another example meaning, "Who is the girl?" First, the interrogative pronoun to ask about people, "who." |
| Daniele: Chi. |
| Asia: Second, a verb, in this case "to be," conjugated in the third person singular. |
| Daniele: è. |
| Asia: Third, a noun or noun phrase, which works as copula. In this case, "the girl." |
| Daniele: la ragazza. |
| Asia: Altogether we have... |

| Asia: How do you say - "Who is the lady?" To give you a hint, "the lady" is... |

| Asia: "Who is the lady?" |
| [pause] |
| Daniele: Chi è la signora? [slow] Chi è la signora? [normal] Chi è la signora? |
