INTRODUCTION |
Asia: Hi everyone, I'm Asia. |
Daniele: And I'm Daniele. |
Asia: And welcome to Must-Know Italian Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 15. Making Negative Commands. |
Asia: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for requesting that someone refrain from doing something, in an informal way. |
PATTERN |
Asia: For example, "Don't eat too much." |
Daniele: Non mangiare troppo. |
Daniele: [slow] Non mangiare troppo. |
Asia: The pattern for informally requesting that someone refrain from doing something has 3 elements. First, the negative adverb meaning "not." |
Daniele: Non. |
Asia: Second, a verb in the infinitive form, so in this case "to eat." |
Daniele: mangiare. |
Asia: And last, an adverb, meaning "too much." |
Daniele: troppo. |
Asia: Altogether, we have, "Don't eat too much." |
Daniele: Non mangiare troppo. [slow] Non mangiare troppo. [normal] Non mangiare troppo. |
Asia: Start with the negative adverb meaning “not” |
Daniele: non |
Asia: followed by an infinitive verb. The sentence may finish with a complement. The complement can be either a phrase, an adverb, a noun, a noun phrase, a phrasal verb, or something else. |
Daniele: Non mangiare troppo. |
Asia: So remember, for the informal negative commands, the negative adverb is followed by a verb in the infinitive form. Lastly, add a complement. |
Asia: Here's another example meaning, "Don't drink alcohol." First, the negative adverb meaning "not." |
Daniele: Non. |
Asia: Second, a verb in the infinitive form, in this case "to drink." |
Daniele: bere. |
Asia: Third, noun, in this case "alcohol." |
Daniele: alcol. |
Asia: Altogether we have... |
Daniele: Non bere alcol. [slow] Non bere alcol. [normal] Non bere alcol. |
Asia: "Don't drink alcohol." |
[pause] |
Daniele: Non bere alcol. |
Asia: How do you say - "Don’t speak in English." To give you a hint, "to speak" is... |
Daniele: parlare. [slow] parlare. [normal] parlare. |
Asia: "Don’t speak in English." |
[pause] |
Daniele: Non parlare in inglese. [slow] Non parlare in inglese. [normal] Non parlare in inglese. |
[pause] |
Daniele: Non parlare in inglese. |
