INTRODUCTION
Asia: Hi everyone, I'm Asia.
Daniele: And I'm Daniele.
Asia: And welcome to Must-Know Italian Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 1. Talking About Your Profession.
Asia: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for talking about your profession.
PATTERN
Asia: For example,
Asia: "I am a teacher."
Daniele: (Io) sono insegnante.
Daniele: [slow] (Io) sono insegnante.
Asia: The pattern for talking about your profession has 3 elements. First is a pronoun, in this case "I."
Daniele: Io.
Asia: Second, the verb "to be" conjugated in the first person singular.
Daniele: sono.
Asia: Third, your profession, in this case "teacher." This refers to both a male and a female speaker.
Daniele: insegnante.
Asia: Altogether, we have.. "I am a teacher."
Daniele: (Io) sono insegnante. [slow] (Io) sono insegnante. [normal] (Io) sono insegnante.
Asia: In Italian, the pronoun can be omitted as it is implied in the verb conjugation. But if you want to emphasize, you can include the pronoun at the beginning of the sentence. Then comes the verb "to be," conjugated according to the pronoun. At the end comes the profession, which is a noun inflected by the gender and number of the subject. Note that in Italian the article "a/an" can be omitted before the profession.
Daniele: (Io) sono insegnante.
Asia: So remember that to talk about your profession, just say "I", plus the verb "to be," plus the profession. Be aware of the speaker's gender.
Asia: Here is another example meaning, "I am a doctor." First, is the pronoun, in this case "I."
Daniele: Io.
Asia: Second, the verb "to be" conjugated in the first person singular.
Daniele: sono.
Asia: Third, your profession, in this case "doctor." This refers to both a male and female speaker.
Daniele: medico.
Asia: Altogether we have..
Daniele: (Io) sono medico. [slow] (Io) sono medico. [normal] (Io) sono medico.
Asia: "I am a doctor."
[pause]
Daniele: (Io) sono medico.
Asia: How do you say - "I am a dentist"? To give you a hint, "dentist" is..
Daniele: dentista. [slow] dentista. [normal] dentista.
Asia: I am a dentist.
[pause]
Daniele: (Io) sono dentista. [slow] (Io) sono dentista. [normal] (Io) sono dentista.
[pause]
Daniele: (Io) sono dentista.
