Hi Doug,
"Giornata" is used:
- to talk about what happens during the time from morning to evening:
Una giornata noiosa = A boring day.
Ti auguro una buona giornata = I wish you a good day
Com'รจ andata la giornata? = How was your day?
- in some epressions:
in giornata = within the end of the day
bella/brutta giornata = good/bad day
giornata lavorativa = working day
- to refer to the weather:
giornata piovosa/soleggiata/ventosa = rainy/sunny/windy day
Hope this helps!

What is the difference between "giorno" and "giornata"? I see them used interchangeably.
