| Cinzia: The third category includes names that take a specific gender only when they refer to a specific person. |
| Marco: This group includes nouns whose gender is masculine when they refer to males, and feminine when they refer to females. For instance |
| Cinzia: La giornalista è alta e carina. |
| Marco: "The journalist is tall and nice-looking." giornalista in this case is feminine |
| Cinzia: Il giornalista italiano ha lavorato in America. |
| Marco: "The Italian journalist worked in the US." in this case giornalista is masculine |
| Cinzia: La paracadutista è atterrata senza problemi. |
| Marco: "The parachutist landed safely." |
| Cinzia: Il paracadutista è salito sull'aereo. |

| Marco: As you can see from the examples above, unless we previously know the gender of the person we are talking about, we can infer this only by the elements attached to the noun. |
