Becky: Welcome to ItalianPod101.com. This is 3-Minute Italian Season 1, Lesson 10 - Asking How Much Something Costs. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask how much something costs in Italian.

Becky: Here's the way to ask 'How much does it cost?' in Italian.
Ofelia: [Normal] Quanto costa?
Becky: First is a word meaning 'how much'
Ofelia: [Normal] quanto [Slow] quanto
Becky: Last is the word meaning 'costs'
Ofelia: [Normal] costa [Slow] costa
Becky: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the question meaning 'How much does it cost?'
Ofelia: [Slow] Quanto costa? [Normal] Quanto costa?
Becky: Here's the way to ask, 'How much does this cost?'
Ofelia: [Normal] Quanto costa questo?
Becky: First is a word meaning 'how much'

Becky: Next is the word meaning 'costs'

Hi Oluchi,

thanks for your question.

I believe it would be understandable enough, but it's not common. To shorten the sentence, we tend to say "quant'è?" which means "how much is it?" and you can use also for more than one thing. Basically, it can mean both "how much is it" and "how much is everything?".

Remember that it's "quanto" both when asking about something singular and plural (quanto costa / quanto costano).
