Sounds of Venice - part 2

Venice speaks many foreign languages: all languages of the world meet in Venice creating a spider net of sounds all of which is underscored by pigeons cooing and beating their wings hysterically. Venetian dialect and songs, is an eruption of human noise that vanishes as you soon as you leave the main streets, as you move away from San Marco’s Square and Rialto you enter a narrow alley, between two little squares where the air is stifled, where walls have ears, and where a baby cry is echoed by the sound of a ball bouncing against the wall and kids’ playful voices.
And from restaurants, from homes, from cafés the jingle of dishware clashes against each other resonating as if they were crystal bells at the mercy of the wind. The voice of Venice also vibrates with these sounds, with the peace of a canal disturbed by a water droplet, furtively falling from the sky, of a wave that skirts a stone, and of an oar’s plunge and a gondola brushing against the water, with squeaking ropes that tie the boats to the poles. And myself, still silent, I proceed, not letting the shuffle of my thoughts or my footfalls obscure the seraphic pulsing of this marvelous city.
Two bridges, and one alley and you can hear the melody of piano, violin and organ exercises, sneaking languidly from wide open windows, from half-open gates, and from church walls. The music of Venice is this silent harmony of sound</itunes:summary>

----Informal English----

Carnival in Italy:

Carnival is one of the most appreciated cultural and social events in Italy. It is celebrated in February, during Lent. Since the age of Ancient Rome, it’s possible to find many events, as the Saturnalia, which are easily connected to the present Carnival because of their content and nature.

In regard to the etymology of the word “Carnival”, it most likely stems from the Latin expression “carne levare” (“to cut out with meat/don’t eat meat”), a religious habit that consisted in the abstention from eating meat during Lent. Due to the irreverent and licentious nature of this event, it’s then paradoxical that its original meaning has to be connected with a religious belief. At the same time this makes us understand that the Carnival perhaps was born as reply to the religious phenomenon. In fact, during Carnival, the usual rules and laws, which are normally applied in the society, are suspended. Social hierarchies are dropped: disguised by the traditional masks the rich become poor and the poor become rich.

Even if Carnival presents more or less the same features in the entire territory of Italy, it must be pointed out that, according to the cities and the traditions tied to them, it acquires a differen</itunes:summary>

----Informal English----

Lunchtime in Monti

The Monti district is, just like Trastevere, one of the oldest districts in Rome. Its name comes from the fact that it used to actually stretch across four different hills: the Esquilino, the Viminale, as well as part of the Quirinale, and the Celio. And even though nowadays, here, as in the rest of Rome, the prices of houses are sky-high, this has always been, well, at least since the Roman age, a real working-class area. Both the Forum and the Suburra were in fact very close.

Today I took the subway to get here, the blue line, Cavour station stop. Now that you’re here pay attention, I say to my gracious guest Owin, this is one of the few places where you can still breathe the typical atmosphere of the old Rome, the feeling of being in a small country town even though you’re a stone’s throw away from the Coliseum.

Apart from Folklore, the inhabitants of Monti still know each other and they are really trying to recover, especially lately, that communitarian, kind of mutual life-style of the past centuries.

Just think, their sense of belonging was so strong that it wasn’t unusual, in the 14th cent. for these folk, to fight bloody battles against the inhabitants of Trastevere, I tell her this, but she doesn’t seem very interested in the story. I think she is rather hungry.

She tells me she is starving and that she would like to eat something. Let’s postpone the history lesson then, and do lunch instead. I would prefer to get a table at some restaurant or inn, any place where we can eat in peace. But instead, she keeps saying she has no time, a lot of places to visit still, and that she prefers something quicker. If you eat badly your whole day will be ruined, I try to explain, it`s better not to eat at all. She doesn’t listen to me . Instead she asks what fun things there are to do near here. I think about it for a bit, and then we head for a bistro </itunes:summary>

Marcella: If I knew it, we could have gone to the Rolling Stones.
Manuel: But shouldn’t it be “If I had known it”
Giulia: Ahah, don’t be square-head, it’s fine also this way.
Marcella: We could go there anyway, what do you think?
Manuel: This sculpture is very nice, I wonder what it represents.
Giulia: Let’s act being art critics.

----Informal English----

Sounds of Venice - part 1
The voice of Venice is transparent. I have no more doubts now, after having stopped a whole day to listen to it. This time I allowed Venice to talk to me, and not the other way around, which is what usually happens . It could be the habit to all the magic that Venice emanates which makes Venetians so numb and neglectful, or, I say to myself, it could be that when you are born here you cannot imagine how rich the sensorial experience is, of those who come to Venice as tourists.

For once I want to try listening to my city through the ears of those who meet it for the first time, but I also want to try retrieving from my memory all those sounds that make the voice of my Venice so unique and unreal, so out of this world, so silently loud.

In Venice there are no cars, except in the handful of square meters where Piazzale Roma is located, i.e. the Venetian bus terminal. And it is right here, in this square, that is not a square, but a jammed space for any wheeled vehicle to use as landing place, that we depart from this world. You leave your car, coach, bike, bus, bicycle or similar, behind, and you take a couple of steps towards the water and then all the habitual, urban sounds, which more or less everyone knows, become immediately a far and distant memory: in Venice you are barbarically and miraculously deprived of traffic noises, of engine’s roars, of exhaust pipes’ gabbles, of horn’s squalling and tyre</itunes:summary>

Italian music

Italy has an old musical tradition. If you think about “opera lirica”, Italian popularity doesn’t have any competitors: many great composers such as Rossini, Verdi and Puccini were Italian and their masterpieces like Il Barbiere di Siviglia, La Traviata, La Bohème and La Cavalleria Rusticana have impressed thousands of opera lovers for many centuries all over the world.

This musical genre was very popular in Italy in the 1700`s and 1800`s. On the other hand, modern Italian music didn’t have the same impact abroad, despite its good composers and musicians.

In Italy, since the 60`s and 70`s, many songwriters have become famous: Francesco Guccini, Fabrizio De André, Paolo Conte and Lucio Dalla are just a few of the names that became famous in those years. Their music is very sober: their songs are often composed by very melodic and simple guitar or piano chords. At the same time, their lyrics are complex, fancy and politically engaged. In other words, their lyrics mirror the atmosphere and the social environment in which people were living at that time: in Italy, in those years, artists needed to express their ideas and feelings through words more than music.
